4. Speaking.
Dialogue. - Why are people all over the world so much concerned about environmental problems?
- The first thing
to be said is that they are the problems of all peoples and nations. If land
belongs to the countries and certain people, the air and water of the ocean do
not belong to any country or man but used by everybody. It is our common
treasure. Then I must say that environment is not only our life, but also the
future of the Earth.
- Why is water
pollution so dangerous?
- There are many
reasons to be troubled by the water pollution. The first reason is that water
is life for the whole planet. Life appeared in the water and depends even now
on its quality. We drink only fresh water, but the circulation of the water on
the Earth is such that the quality of fresh water and the quality of salted
water of the World
Ocean are closely
connected. The second reason is richness of the water in food supplies. Sea
products such as crabs and lobsters are rich in vitamins and good for health,
they are considered to be delicious, luxurious food. Fish is rich in many
important substances. Water weeds are used as food by both people and animals,
they also take part in the oxygen restoring. If the water is polluted, we will
run out of such good food and there will be less oxygen produced, which can be
very harmful for the planet and mankind.
- How does water
get polluted?
- Ships let trash
into it, sometimes oil flows from broken ships. The temperature of the World Ocean
grows slightly but it results in enormous growth of some water weeds which
absorb oxygen and pollute the water with the trash of their vital activity.
- Is air pollution
dangerous?
- Yes, it is.
Breathing polluted air causes many diseases, damages buildings and forests.
- Can a man in the
street help Nature somehow?
- Yes, there are
many ways to help Nature. Every man's work will be little but there are many of
us and together we can help a lot.

Topic.
Climate changes
The problem of climate changing is very important nowadays. Some people
are concerned very seriously while others believe that there is no link between
human activity and this problem. And I am of opinion that this is a really
serious matter.
To start
with, everything what is going on with the climate is really serious because
arctic ice has begun melting so that it can lead to the global elevation of the
ocean level. Moreover, climate changing can be caused by the air pollution. Our
plants produce a lot of harmful substances which destroy the ozone layer and
solar radiation can cause overheating of the planet. Besides, changing climate
is very dangerous for animals and all human beings because our habitat is also
changing. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, it allows infrared radiation from
the sun to enter the atmosphere on the Earth and not to leave it. This process
causes the surface to heat up. Scientists discovered that the polar ice caps
and glaciers around the world were melting. It creates more water and raises
sea levels. In many parts of our planet, from North Pole to South Pole, there
are intense floods on land near the coast. In general, the world’s climate is
changing: warm areas are suffering from severe winters, and cold areas are
getting warmer.
But some people are of opinion that
global warming and climate changing are not connected to human factors, that
people are only trying to make their life better and more comfortable. And
everything what we do has only a positive purpose. And finally most people
consider that nature and its resources are unlimited and it can bear any thing
what we do to it.
In conclusion, I believe, humans should protect nature and appreciate
what it gives to us, because we are all children of nature. And the matter of
climate changing should be taken seriously too.

Topic.
Weather and climate.
Sometimes, people don’t know what they could talk about, especially if there is a language barrier between them. But there are some simple topics, which could be discussed even if you have small knowledge of the language you try to speak or culture, religion and some personal interest of your interlocutor. One of these topics is weather.
The weather is uncertain, but people learned to forecast it. We can see the forecast on TV or in the Internet. Scientists get all data from planes, ships, space stations, etc. This information doesn’t let us forget to take an umbrella or a hat, gloves and scarf to avoid a flue.
In the place where I live it’s very changeable and variable.
In the place where I live it’s very changeable and variable.
Every season is wonderful in its own way. In spring the air is refreshing, the trees are in blossom, the ground is covered with the first tender flowers. The birds start singing heavenly songs. In summer it can be really dry and sultry, there are thunders and lightnings during the heavy showers. People go sunbathing, fishing and sailing and enjoy all kinds of fruits and berries. In autumn the trees turn golden, it often rains cats and dogs and it’s quite muddy. The sky is overcast with grey clouds, sometimes it’s foggy and chilly and the days become shorter. In winter the snow covers the ground, the air is frosty, the roads are slippery. It is mainly freezing and there are periods of severe colds and heavy snowfalls. The temperature can fall down to 35 degrees below zero.
I prefer not to complain about the weather but generally I enjoy mild and calm weather with a moderate breeze. I don’t quite like damp and gloomy weather and it’s hard for me to stand windy or hot summer days with mosquitoes and flies and oppressive heat. But so many men, so many minds.
Our country is so huge and the weather is not the same in different parts of Russia. It depends on the geographical position and the type of climate. We must admit that the climate has changed much due to global warming and winters have become much warmer. It looks rather strange and disappointing when there is little snow in winter and sometimes it even sleets or drizzles.
Frankly speaking, I don’t trust our misleading weather forecasts as they don’t come true as a rule. The weather is changeable and it is a thing that is beyond us, so it’s better to keep an umbrella in your bag all the year round.

Topic.
Fashion and my attitude to it.
Fashion has always had a huge
influence on people around the world. The main reason why we try to follow the
latest fashion trends is a desire to look stylish, attractive, popular and more
confident. Generally people judge a new person by his appearance and his
clothes and only then, by his inner qualities. There is a proverb: “Good
clothes open all doors.” That’s why we do our best to make a favourable
impression on others. We spend a lot of money to keep up with fashion and buy
designer clothes.
Fashion often means style,
glamour and success. It is also a big business. It’s hard to resist the
temptation to buy some brand-name clothing in our modern world. Every day we
pass by colourful shop-windows, we see plenty of ads everywhere: on buses,
billboards, TV and in magazines. Many teenagers pay too much attention to their
friends’ and classmates’ appearance. Sadly, if some parents are not able to
afford buying trendy clothes with fashion labels, their kids often become
outsiders. So clothes usually separate people into social groups.
In my opinion every person can
have his own style and look unique. He should choose clothes according to his
taste, age, job, constitution and character. I am glad to say that I don’t pay
so much attention to fashion and I am not its victim. I don’t care too much
about what other people wear. The most important thing for me in the outlook is
neatness, natural look and beauty. And it should certainly suit the occasion. I
must admit that some fashionable clothes are quite ridiculous and unpractical.
There was a time, for instance, when young people wore baggy clothes, shoes on
enormous platforms, red hair, black fingernails and bright make-up. To my mind,
it was just a silly waste of money. Besides, if a person doesn’t have
a good taste he is not able to put things together and look
attractive and stylish even in fashionable clothes.

Healthy life

Everybody wants to live a long healthy life. Nowadays a healthy body becomes a
fashion, an ideal of modern life.
There are many ways to keep fit.
For example, healthy food is a very important factor. Overeating
causes many dangerous diseases. We shouldn’t snack and we should have breakfast. We should eat low-fat food,
more fruit and vegetables, meat, milk products, which are rich in vitamins
and proteins. We shouldn’t eat at night. If you keep to a diet, you must do
it carefully, because sometimes diets may be harmful.
Besides, to be healthy, a person must stop smoking and drinking
much. Besides, nowadays there is a problem of taking drugs, especially among
young people. It causes many diseases and leads to death.

everything is fine with me. I've been just looking for a job. Anyway that wasn't a good idea. And how
are things with you? Has
anything new happened while I was away?
Peter: I see. It's always
worth trying, Jean. I'm sure you'll find a suitable occupation for yourself
very soon. In fact, one of my old friends is running a clothing company in Chicago and they often
need good managers there. I can give you his phone number if you want.
Jean: Yes, sure. That would be great!

Peter: Hi, Jean! I haven't seen you for
ages! How have you been?
Jean: Hi, Peter! I'm
glad to see you! I've been to Chicago
for the last two weeks.

that's the reason we haven't met for a long time.

My friend.
Friendship is
a special relationship between people. People need this relationship because
they expect help and comfort from each other. Those who have friends have less
stress and live longer. Friendship is usually based on common interests and
mutual understanding, true encouragement and sympathy.
My best friend’s name is
Boris. He is fifteen years old and he is my classmate. We have been friends
since the first year at school.
Boris is very attractive. He
is tall, slim and strong. He has dark hair and brown eyes. We share many common
interests: we play in the same football team, we both like adventurous stories,
and we have the same attitude to life.
Boris does well at school. He
is especially good at History and English. He helps me to do my homework,
explains to me when I don’t understand something. He also takes part in
different school activities, concerts and parties.
My friend’s opinion is very
important for me. I can discuss all my problems with him. He is very gentle,
kind and modest. Boris is also a very patient and hardworking person. If
something goes wrong, he anyway tries and doesn’t give up.
His interests are broad. He is
interested in the history of ancient civilizations and architecture. He plays
the guitar and likes to draw.
Sometimes I fall out with
Boris but make peace with him right away. When we have free time, we go out
together. Usually we invite our friends and go to the cinema.
Boris is very reliable and
honest person and at any moment I can rely on him.
Nowadays people prefer to have more money than many friends. They say
that a person with money can afford everything and can solve any problem. I am
sure that money can’t buy you real friends. And there are really such
situations when you need friends and their emotional support more than money.
That’s why I prefer to have both money and real friends.

Topic
My family.
Our family is not
large. We are a family of four: my father, my mother, my younger brother and I.
My name is Olga.
I am seventeen. I am a school leaver. My younger brother is ten. He is a pupil
of the fifth form. He looks like our father. He has brown eyes, short straight
hair. He is tall and thin. As for me everybody says I look like my mother. I
have the same blue eyes, a snub nose, fair curly hair. I am not tall and 1 am
not thin. I am an ordinary girl of 17.
Our family lives
in Moscow. We have a nice three-roomed flat on the fourth floor of a
multistoried building. We have all modern conveniences: running hot and cold
water, telephone, central heating, rubbish chute. We have no gas range. All the
flats in our house are provided with electric cookers. We are satisfied with
our flat where we moved only a year ago.
My mother is
about 40. She looks pretty well We all love dearly our Mum, and are always
ready to help her about the house. We try to share our duties. Returning home
after classes I usually do the shopping. 1 drop in at the bakery and at the
dairy.
My younger
brother also has his duties about the house. He helps mother to set the table
and wash the dishes. He usually sweeps the floor and dusts the furniture. On
Saturdays Dad joins us in our work about the house. He likes to make or repair
something. He also likes to clean the flat with a vacuum-cleaner. I suppose
it's his little hobby But speaking seriously his real hobby is taking photos.
He can do it perfectly well. We have several family albums with the pictures
taken by him.
My father is an
engineer in computers. He is considered to be an experienced engineer. We are
very proud of him but there is one unpleasant thing with this: he is always
busy and very often he works overtime.
My mother is an
economist. The firm she works in deals with trading. They have business in
different towns of Russia. She is to go on business trips from time to time.
We have a little
summer house and a lovely garden near it not far from Moscow. The nature is very
beautiful there. There is a lake there. My grandparents like to live there in
summer.
They don't work
now. They are on pension. They live in an industrial district of the city where
the air is rather polluted. That's why they are always looking forward to going
to our summer house. My Granny is fond of gardening and my Grandpa likes to go
fishing.
Our family is
friendly. I like them all.
